DO's:
- Be calm and quiet when you bring your kitten into your home.
- Place the carrier on the floor and let the kitten come out on its own.
- Encourage the kitten to come out of the carrier: for the first time coax him/her out with a teaser-toy.
- Keep the kitten in a small room to start, slowly allowing him/her more run of the house.
- Kittenproof your home prior to the kitten's arrival.
- Let the kitten sleep with you.
- Introduce the kitten slowly to other pets. We recommend quarantine for two weeks.
- Sit on the floor, on the kitten’s level, to play and socialize.
- Use stainless steel or glass dishes that are dishwasher safe.
- Keep the kitten on it's current diet for the first ten days. After that, if you insist on changing its diet, do so gradually over a week to ten day period to avoid drastic stomach upset.
- Make sure the kitten knows where his/her food and water is kept and that he/she is eating and drinking enough.
- A timeout (approx. 30 min) in a small room, such as a bathroom, may be required several times a day to force the kitten to stop playing and eat and drink.
- Use clay or a pelletted litter, such as Feline Pine. They are used to this litter and it will not harm them if they ingest some of it.
- Place the kitten in the litter box several times in the first couple of days.
- Have multilple litter boxes per cat per house level. I.e. two story house w/one cat= at least two litter boxes.
- Please call us with any and all questions. We will do our best to advise with any situation.
DON'TS:
- Give the kitten full run of the house immediately.
- Feed cheap commercial cat food w/lot sof grains. Cats are carnivoires and need meat.
- Use plastic dishes-they can cause feline acne.
- Have your kitten/cat declawed-it can cause serious behavioral problems. *See behavior page
- Use a clumping type litter, especially with kittens.
- Move the litter box for the first couple of weeks - when/if you do move it place the kitten in it several times.
- Leave a down comforter on your bed for the first few weeks if you will be allowing the kitten to sleep with you. To a newly awakened kitten this feels like a litter box under their feet and consequently may be used as one.
- Use amonia based cleaners to clean accidents off litterboxes.
- Place litterbox right next to food and water.
- Introduce too many people to the kitten right at first. After he/she is comfortable in the home start introducing new people.
- Introduce other pets to the kitten too soon. Don't let your kitten feel overwhelmed.
- Yell or be physical with your kitten. This will only make them afraid of people.
- Allow anyone to rough house with your kitten.
- Take the kitten to high pet traffic areas like: petsmart or allow it to run around the vet office floor. When going to vet, please have your kitten safe inside it's carrier. Avoid "dirty floors" at all costs, until all vaccinations are done and kitten has maximum immunity.
- Take the kitten outside, on a harness or walking jacket, until after it has had all of its vaccinations.
- Ever allow your kitten/cat to roam outside unsupervised.
